DoD SMART Scholarship Sponsoring Facilities

The Importance of Sponsoring Facilities and Their Role

Sponsoring Facilities (SFs) are Department of Defense (DoD) labs and agencies where SMART scholars complete internships during their degree pursuit and work after graduation. SFs are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients and sponsoring them from education through employment. Their involvement in the award process ensures scholarship recipients’ education and career goals closely align with the SF’s mission and program objectives. This synergy allows scholars to apply their expertise in meaningful work while SFs gain dedicated, highly skilled, DoD STEM professionals – resulting in a stronger workforce committed to advancing the nation’s leading edge in critical technologies and research.

The SMART Scholarship Program partners with more than 150 SFs, representing a wide range of DoD components and agencies across the United States. SFs are classified into six different facility types, each offering unique opportunities for SMART scholars.
